How Betsy DeVos Rose to the Top

Betsy DeVos is a philanthropist and an activist. She is the current Secretary of Education in the United States. She assumed office on the 7th February after her approval by Congress. Her responsibilities include ensuring that there are equal opportunities for students and that location does not play a role in the school that a child attends.

DeVos studied at Calvin College. She has an Arts degree from the University. She is married to Dick DeVos who is the former chief executive officer of Amway. She was appointed the Republican National Committeewoman of the state of Michigan in 1992. DeVos became the chair of the Michigan Republican Party five years later. She served for two terms. She was once the chairperson of the board of the Acton Institute, All Children Matter, and the Alliance for School Choice. DeVos has advocated heavily for the adoption of the charter school system in Detroit over the years. She is noted for her role as the chairwoman of the WindQuest Group that she founded with her husband in 1989. It was also the same year that they launched the Dick & Betsy DeVos Family Foundation. The foundation focuses on transforming five key areas namely justice, arts, leadership, education, and community. The couple has donated more than a hundred million dollars to different causes to date.

They have supported think-tanks, schools, hospitals, and art organizations. She was appointed by President Bush to serve on the board of directors of the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. DeVos and her husband made a donation of twenty million dollars to the center to fund the training of managers and the directors.

DeVos is an advocate for school vouchers that allow children to study at private institutions with public funding. She served as the chair of the American Federation for Children. This is an advocacy organization that promotes school choice and tax credit programs. She has pushed for this because of the poor performance of public schools. Her visit to the Potter’s House Christian School opened up her eyes to the struggles that parents were encountering. This led her to start supporting some of the children who came from low-income families at the school. DeVos and her husband continue to support the school and the students today.

DeVos advocated for the expansion of charter schools in Michigan. This eventually led her to extend it to a wider scope. Several states have adopted school voucher programs including Virginia, Mississippi, Ohio, and Florida. Betsy DeVos is a board member of the Foundation for Excellence in Education.
