Dan Wetzel ReviewLet me start off by saying that I do like the Katy LA Fitness in Houston, TX. I show up and do everything in my power to stay focused and lift heavy. I’m what they call a “hard gainer” and my skinny body seems to do everything possible to reject my efforts to gain strength and size. I stumbled onto the truths about lifting barbells loaded with heavy weight by reading a book by Mark Rippetoe and hanging out at a site called Starting Strength. If you’re a parent then the first place you’re going to stop in at will most likely be the Kids Klub child watch center. This is a boon for anyone who has children and doesn’t feel that the responsibilities of raising a little one means that you have to “let yourself go” for the next ten years. The quality child care facility at the Katy, TX LA Fitness means that you can plan on consistently seeing gains in both strength and endurance in your own life while at the same time setting a good example for your kids to emulate in the future.

Both strength training and cardiovascular conditioning are primarily forged in the core training zones of the club. For those who appreciate high-tech equipment, LA Fitness has equipped this gym with state-of-the-art machines such as heart-rate-monitor equipped treadmills and ellipticals as well as circuit-style isolation strength machines. Members who feel that free weight training is best for seeing exponential gains in strength and lean muscle mass will be glad to find that the gym is lined with rows of dumbbells and other essentials such as a squat rack, flat bench, inclined bench, and more.

Basketball courts, racquetball courts, group exercise classes, and lane-divided swimming pool are all premium features which you’ll find at the Katy Freeway LA Fitness. Personal trainers are on-hand to help you establish realistic fitness goals and help you put together a plan to use all of the various options this gym has to offer in a way which helps you achieve them.

Let me start off by saying that I do like the Katy LA Fitness in Houston, TX. The funny thing, though, about working out here is the OTHER people who show up.

Seriously. If you just look around and let the humor of the situation sink in, you discover that everyone here is pretty much afflicted with a serious case of fuckarounditis. They are doing things on the strength machines and free weights that they’ve got no business doing if they have any hope of seeing any physical change. They’re wasting time pretty much enjoying a mental masturbation session which tells them that they are getting stronger. Yeah right. I’m guessing that the LA Fitness staff don’t really care. A basic lifting form/gym ettiquite class should be mandatory upon signup here. So that people don’t embarrass themselves.

Let me give you some examples. The other day I saw a series of three young college-aged guys all wearing NAVY t-shirts and matching shorts doing curls in the squat rack! They were using one of those 25lb sissy barbells too if I remember correctly. I guess they must have been on leave or something. Whatever the case was, they were NOT representing their service very well. GO NAVY!

It’s very rare to see anyone that knows how to squat here. Granted, this isn’t a problem that you’ll see only at the Katy LA Fitness in Houston, TX. Over the years I’ve been a member at 24 Hour Fitness, a Crossfit box, and even Powerhous Gym. Failure to squat properly is a chronic issue at pretty much every gym (large and small) across America. I’m talking REAL squats here people. Legs parallel or lower when you go down into the hole. It seems that the ¼ squat is en vogue here or something, because that’s all I see. Every day. If I see anyone in the squat rack at all.

The exception is a guy I who I’ve dubbed “Sampson”. This is an old guy who must be a powerlifter or something. He really doesn’t look like he belongs at LA Fitness. He’s got long, white hair and a long beard and always wears t-shirts with Christian religious themes and stuff. At first I thought of him as Moses…since he looks so old. But then I saw him lift. The guy will put 5 plates on each side of the bar and deep squat them like it’s cool. So if he someone from the Bible who’s been raised from the dead then he’s gotta be Sampson. Nobody talks to him and he doesn’t talk to anyone. Crazy inspiring to see him there though.

Other than Sampson, I think I can count the number of people who are serious about getting strong on one hand. I’ve been here both in the morning hours, the afternoon, and evening time blocks, so I know who comes in here on a regular basis. If you are not regular, then you’re not training for strength. There are not a lot of people who could be considered serious.

I guess it’s a fact that no gym can pick their members if they want to keep the bills paid and I can’t imagine that the Katy TX LA Fitness is any different so I just do my think, laugh to myself and shake my head at all the nonsense I see swirling around me, and then go home.

Nobody can say that the LA Fitness team doesn’t fulfill on their end of the bargain though. They keep the place pretty clean, make sure the equipment is in working order almost all of the time, provide alternative fitness options such as backetball and racquetball, and have free group exercise classes all throughout the day. Some of these classes look fun, but I’m thinking of asking Sampson to help me get into some serious powerlifting shape one day and if he ever sees me in there I know that I’ll be blackballed for life.

I really do think that anyone can get a lot more healthy if they sign up as a member here. They can even become rather strong if they follow proven training patterns centered around barbell training such as found in Rippetoe’s book “Starting Strength.” Unfortunately, 99% of the people who walk through doors here at the LA Fitness Katy TX will never realize their potential because they simply don’t know what they don’t know about what it takes to transform your body from weak to strong.
